Failure to bring a motorcycle as dowry has cost 22-year-old Babby Devi her life. She was strangulated to death by her in–laws.
The incident occurred on Thursday night at Bhaluatard village under Jamua police station, 30 km from here.
According to first information report lodged by Umashankar Bhokta, the father of Babby Devi who is resident of Karodih village of the same police station, she was married off to Manoj Mahto alias Bodha Mahto, the son of Huro Mahto of the village in the year 2012. Sufficient dowry was given to the bridegroom at the time of the marriage, the father of the victim said
But her greedy in-laws, with the support of her other family of members, put pressure on her to bring a motorcycle. As the parents of the hapless girl could not meet the demand, she was tortured mentally as well as physically by her in-laws, the FIR said.
The father of the victim was informed by Babby’s neighbours who found her dead at her house on Thursday night. Dozens of neighbours had gathered at her house upon hearing her shout for help.
A case has been registered under applicable section against her husband, mother-in-law, father–in-law and brother-in-law
The police are investigating into incident and has taken three persons including her husband, mother in-law and father-in-law under custody.
