The two-day conference of West Region Power Committee (WRPC) will begin here on Wednesday.

This is the 31st meeting of WRPC in which detailed discussions will be held over critical issues like balancing the power demand availability, grid coordination discipline and upcoming projects, officials informed.

The conference will be held in VIP road located at Hotel Babylon International from 10:30 am onwards.

Senior officials from state-owned power companies of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Daman & Diu and other states will take part in the conference.

Notably, Shivraj Singh, Chairman of Chhattisgarh State owned power companies is also the President of WRPC.

Moreover, Managing Director of Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company limited (CSPGCl) SB Agrawal is the President of WRPC’s Technical Coordination Committee.

The Program Coordinator and Chief Engineer of CSPGCl Ajay Shrivastava informed that for better coordination between different power systems across India they have been divided into five regions. Chhattisgarh along with above-mentioned states falls into the WRPC, he said.

The rapid development, future prospects, supply of power demand during summer season along with other key issues will be discussed during the meeting.

Notably, the the NDA government at the Centre has initiated National Smart Grid Mission to make the Indian Power infrastructure cost effective, responsive and reliable. Smart grids use sensors, meters, digital controls and analytic tools to automate, monitor and control the two-way flow of energy across operations—from power plant to plug. This is a very ambitious programme and the 100 smart cities to be set up will also have smart grids resulting in sizeable savings in power.

Notably, Chhattisgarh has wind energy potential of 77 MW at 100 meters above ground level according to the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE).

The NIWE recently launched Wind Energy Resource Map of India at 100 meter above ground level (AGl) on online Geographic Information System platform. The wind energy potential in the country at 100 m AGl is over 302 GW, officials stated.

The wind power is being installed in the country under three different modes-- Sale to DISCOMS under Feed-in-Tariff mode; Captive use; and Third party sale under Independent Power Producer (IPP) mode. The Central Government is promoting all three modes of installation.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission on August 7, 2015 has notified forecasting and scheduling regulations and also Deviation Settlement Mechanism for inter-state transmission of solar and wind energy. Further, the Forum of Regulators has also issued model regulations on forecasting, scheduling & deviation settlement of wind & solar generators for intra-state transmission.

Chhattisgarh achieved actual cumulative power generation of  40,173.66 million units (MU) from conventional power stations based in the State of above 25 MW capacity between April-September, 2015, according to the monthly report of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

This was compared to 38773.39 MU generated during the corresponding period of the previous year—a growth of 3.61 per cent, it stated.

It may be mentioned that Chattisgarh State Power Generation Company ltd (CSPGCl) has three major projects in the hydro power sector lined up for development in the coming financial year.

The proposed projects are Matnar Hydro Power Project (HPP) ( 3x20) MW ( 60 MW) in Bastar district, Kanhar HPP ( 2x25) MW (50 MW) in Surguja district and Rehgar HPP ( 3x32) MW  (96 MW) in Surguja district, officials stated.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh government is now going all out to develop sizable hydro power potential to electrify villages in remote pockets of the State.
