A male elephant died of electrocution on Monday morning in Korba district of Chhattisgarh.
The incident took place in Khairpar village near the Pasan forest area, Katghora Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kumar Nishant said.
The elephant was separated from a herd of 50 elephants roaming in Pasan area for the last few days.
The animal, aged around 20 years, came in contact with a 11 KV power transmission line while passing through a route between the hills, he said. The power line wire was dangling at a low height.
The power company was informed about the hanging power line but apparently no action was taken by them.
The Forest Department will be filing a case against the power company for the death of the animal. More than 70 elephants have died in the last five years due to electrocution, age and ailments in Chhattisgarh.
