Ten policemen, including Thana in-charge of Chandoura police station, were suspended after a man committed suicide in police custody, officials said here on Wednesday.
“The deceased, Krishna Sarthi (30), was arrested on Wednesday morning following a complaint of domestic violence lodged by his wife’s father,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Surajpur GS Jaiswal said.
As per the complaint, Sarathi, a native of neighbouring Balrampur district, visited his in-laws place Domhat village in Surjapur Tuesday to meet his wife Sundarmani.
After a verbal spate over some issue, he had beaten up his wife and then left for his native place, the police officer said.
Sundarmani’s father lodged the complaint with Chandora police and later Sarathi was arrested from Balrampur and brought to the police station at around 7 am, he said.
At around 12 noon, police personnel saw Sarathi hanging from the gate of the lockup with the bed sheet given to him, he said. The accused was rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead, he added.
“Ten policemen, including the SHO of Chandora RD Singh, have been suspended over the suicide incident, and further probe is underway,” the SP said.
