Take Covid vaccine to avoid Black Fungus: Govt

Staff Reporter

The medical history of ‘Black Fungus’ (mucormycosis) patients in Chhattisgarh shows they were not vaccinated for Covid-19 and had comorbidities like uncontrolled diabetes and also took steroids while being treated, the government said on Sunday.

Chhattisgarh has so far reported 259 cases of ‘Black Fungus’.

This again underlines the fact that vaccination against Covid is a must, even as a preventive measure from Black Fungus, Dr Subash Mishra, Director (Epidemic), told the media on Sunday.

He said there were 230 active Black Fungus cases in the state. The number of patients operated is 115, 16 others have died and 13 patients have been discharged.

Dr Mishra said people should go for vaccination at any cost, irrespective of the vaccine, Covishield or Covaxin, at the earliest. This will reduce the complications post-Covid including the Black Fungus. The mortality rate of mucormycosis is 50 percent, he said.

The state administration is coming out with a plan for people who have not yet been vaccinated.

Dr Mishra said though the Covid positivity rate has reached 2.57 percent, the districts of Janjgir-Champa, Rajnandgaon, Baloda Bazar, Korea, Kanker, Bastar and Bijapur continue to report higher number of new positive cases.

The vaccination process in the 18-44 age category has resumed in most districts with the arrival of fresh stocks of vaccines, he added.
