National president of Woman Congress Committee and All India Congress Committee spokesperson Shobha Ojha on Thursday visited Bilaspur to meet the women and their relatives, who fell victim to the sterilisation camp tragedy.

After taking stock of the situation, a delegation of Congress leaders led by Ojha met the Governor Balramji Dass Tandon and handed over a memorandum to apprise him with their various demands.

“The family planning programme is a national programme. Strict action should be taken against the guilty on showing negligence in implementation of this programme as it also amounts to treason under law” said Ojha.

She demanded to make public the post mortem reports of the deceased, the copy of setting target to perform sterilisation surgery and information about the medicines used in the surgeries as well as names of medical equipment suppliers.

“The tragedy is heart rending as well as a shameful incident for the Nation and the State” said Ojha.

The Governor should review health services in the State, urged Ojha further claiming that the government hospitals, medical colleges and even primary health centre s are in dilapidated condition in the State.

“The dilapidated condition of government-run hospitals and medical services to benefit the hospitals and medical services of private sector is a matter of investigation,” Ojha added.

She also raised the issue of performing sterilization surgery on the women belonging to Baiga tribal community despite the fact that the community comes under primitive tribe group.

She demanded fair investigation in the case and expressed the need of taking strict action to avert recurrence of such incidents in future.
