'Sonia's meeting will have no impact'

The proposed public meeting of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Bhilai will have no impact on the Assembly election, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the area Prem Prakash Pandey said on Tuesday.

The Congress candidate had promised to resolve the ‘lease’ issue of the township residents within 90 days of his winning the last election. The people voted for him but the issue has not yet been resolved even though five years have been passed, the former Assembly speaker said. The Congress candidate and sitting legislator from the area Badruddin Qureshi has been trying to take political benefit by organising a public meeting of Sonia Gandhi, but people will never vote for him as he failed to keep up his promises, he said.

Pandey said the Bharatiya Janata party will rather benefit from the Sonia’s meeting because of the alleged failures of the United Progressive Alliance Government led by the Congress party in the centre. People are fed up with the increase in the prices of essential commodities and the Congress party is unlikely to get any benefit from the meeting, he added.

Expressing confidence that people will vote for him, Pandey said if he wins he will complete all the works he started in the constituency during his last tenure. Pandey pointed out that during his tenure, the drinking water problem were resolved in half of the Khursipara area. The existing legislator, however, failed to provide drinking water facilities in the remaining area during last five years, he said.

Similarly the work of Talpuri twin city housing project was started when he was representing the area in the Assembly but that also remained incomplete. He said the promise was made to establish Swami Vivekananda Technical University but during last five years, the construction of its administrative building also could not start.

Pandey said if people vote for him, he will ensure that the drinking water problem of Khursipara area is resolved. Besides he will also address the ‘lease issue’ to provide housing facilities to the township residents. He will also ensure that an Indian Institute of Technology or a medical college is set up in the city.
