Slum dwellers protest against ration card verification drive

SR

Accusing the district administration of rejecting ration cards, hundreds of slum dwellers led by local leader Brij Mohan Singh on Tuesday staged a demonstration at the office of the Municipal Corporation here. The protest forced the Assistant Commissioner H Chandrakar to call the demonstrators for discussion.

The protestors said 70 per cent population  in Vaishali Nagar Assembly constituency live in slums. Most of the slum dwellers go out of home every day in the morning and return at night. As a result, such people are being deprived of ration card verification. The administration should verify their cards when they are available at homes. It would be good if the administration carries out the work on holidays, they said.

There are many joint families who stay under one roof on account of poverty. The administration has been rejecting their ration card which is an injustice, they said. Similarly, the way the ration of estranged, widow, physically challenged and orphans have been cut down to 10 kg from 35 kg, it is wrong, they said.

The reality is these people live in poverty and they should get 35 kg of ration each. People are dissatisfied the way officials are visiting few families in the locality. The protestors also demanded that citizens of Vaishali Nagar Assembly constituency should be given the Aadhar card the way they are being issued in other constituencies.
