A 11-year-old boy trapped in a borewell in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district since Friday is responding to rescuers and is being provided food, Collector Jitendra Shukla said on Sunday.

All medical facilities have been kept on stand-by after observing Rahul's medical condition, he said, adding that the rescue operation was in full swing with the help of mining experts, Shukla said.

The boy has been trapped in the borewell since Friday in Pihrid village of Malkharoda block of Janjgir-Champa district.

Shukla said the boy was in active mode. He had been given water, bananas and food items. The boy was also helping the team to draw out water which had filled in the pit.

Keeping his health condition, the ambulance and nearest hospital had been readied.

Shukla said the boy was trapped at 60 feet and digging up to 58 feet has been completed. A wall like structure has been created which is closer to the tubewell pit which is around eight feet.

The work of the tunnel will start. All necessary machines have been brought to continue the operation, he said.

The rescue operation using the robot has been postponed as the child had dozed off, an official communication said.

Meanwhile, rescue teams from South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) mines of Kusmunda and Manikpur had reached the site.

They are using machinery mainly used in underground mines. Experts from Jharkhand have also joined the rescuers. The district administration has now declared a 25-metre area as ‘No-Go’ zone. Now, only authorized people involved in the rescue operation will be permitted in the area.
