Questions raised over arrest of suspected SIMI activists

Staff Reporter

Human rights organisations on Thursday raised questions the way the suspected activists of the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) were arrested from Raipur.

Accusing the police of violating the human rights of the affected families, several the human rights organisations including the State unit People’s Union for Civil liberties, All India secular forum, and institute for minority women said the arrest was a well planned attempt to tarnish the image of the minority in the State.

Describing the arrest a conspiracy, they also slammed different media organisations, newspapers and television channels for using words like terrorists on the people held and their families without any substantial evidences.

The contradictory statements made by police and other Government agencies on the arrest have led to this suspicion, they said. Many of the people arrested were local people and were either born in Madhya Pradesh or in Chhattisgarh.

Their families have been living in the localities since last 40-60 years, they said. The signatory of the statement include Sudha Bharadwaj and DP Chouhan of the State unit People’s Union for Civil liberties, Dr BP Rao, Dr lakhan Singh and Soukat Ali of All India secular forum.

They also accused the police and the State Government of being a part of the conspiracy.
