Prohibition is collective social responsibility, says Bhupesh

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday said society should come forward to demand a ban on sale of liquor as it was a social evil. A collective social responsibility was needed for prohibition, he said.

He said that it will take him less than a minute to order liquor prohibition but he can’t do that visualizing its impact.

"We have seen the adverse effects during the lockdown period when people addicted to liquor consumed sanitizer in its absence," he said.

States like Gujarat and Bihar which banned liquor are facing the problem of spurious liquor and people are dying after consuming adulterated liquor there, Baghel said.

"I am personally in favour of not only banning liquor but other addictions like chewing cannabis, tobacco and gudakhu (tobacco-based toothpaste)," he said.

Accepting that liquor prohibition was a part of the Congress election manifesto, Baghel said a time limit was not mentioned and the party was still a firm believer that a ban should be imposed on its sale.

A social environment was needed to stop the use of liquor and social organizations should come forward to make people aware of its ill effects, Baghel added.
