If pointless blasting of horn and pollution at traffic signals irritate you then this move by a city NGO will come as music to your ears–literally.

A city Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) will install speakers at traffic signals in the city that will play instrumental songs from the era of 1980s and 1990s in a volume that will not go beyond a range of 25 metres. Ideal Public Safety and Welfare Society will start installation of the speakers from March 16.

Social messages of public interest like importance of water conservation, road safety, tax payment will also be played through the speakers from time to time. Abiding by Supreme Court’s instruction, the speakers will not function after the deadline of 10 pm.

“This move will not only take stress away from the commuters by playing light music but also impart social message to people who do not have access to such information like harmful effects for mobile radiation”, said Organiser of the organisation Sandeep Dhuppad in a press conference in the city on Friday.

The organisation is doing this in collaboration with the Raipur Municipal Corporation.

These imported soft bass speakers will be waterproof and will be installed on Sunday at Sharda Chowk and Jai Stambh Chowk. The organisation will expand the project to 10 traffic signals in the city soon.

Research has shown that music has a profound effect on our body and psyche. In fact, there’s a growing field of health care known as music therapy, which uses music to heal. Those who practice music therapy are finding a benefit in using music to help cancer patients, children with ADD, and others, and even hospitals are beginning to use music and music therapy to help with pain management, to help ward off depression, to promote movement, to calm patients, to ease muscle tension, and for many other benefits that music and music therapy can bring.
