NMDC's steel plant to use cutting edge technology

Staff Reporter

The production processes at NMDC ltd’s 3.0 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant coming up at Nagarnar near Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh would be driven by cutting edge technology adopted globally, officials informed.

The company which is India's single largest iron ore producer and exporter will develop a ‘Plant Wide Networking Package’ for the steel plant which would manage every aspect of the steel production process including monitoring of the energy consumption in the plant, they informed.

Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC ltd, Narendra Kothari had stated last month that hot trials of the company's steel plant coming up at Nagarnar would commence by December 2016.

He was providing details of the performance of the country’s largest iron ore producer and exporter to Union Minister for Steel & Mines Narendra Singh Tomar during the latter's visit to the Head Office of NMDC limited in Hyderabad .

NMDC is also setting up an elaborate Telecommunication system through Server-based Telephone Exchanges along with remote units on Optical Fibre Cable (OCF) Network for its 3.0 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant at Nagarnar, officials stated.

Notably, the company has already begun the process of building necessary infrastructure for its proposed 3.0 MTPA steel plant coming up at Nagarnar .

NMDC has also recently commissioned its new iron ore mine in Chhattisgarh’s extreme insurgency-hit Dantewada district of Bastar.

The mine- Bailadila Iron Ore Deposit 11B, is located in Bailadila hills where the NMDC has already several massive high-quality iron ore mines spread out in Bacheli and Kirandul areas.

It has developed the mine having iron ore production capacity of 7 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) with an investment of more than Rs 600 crore.

With the commissioning of 11B Project Mine, NMDC has ramped up production capacity from present level of 25 MTPA to 32 MTPA from Chhattisgarh’s Bailadila Sector.

A marathon ‘Slurry Pipeline Transportation System’ has been proposed for transportation of Pellet Feed Concentrate from Bailadila to Vizag via Jagdalpur along National  and State Highways with a provision of partial off-take at NMDC ltd’s proposed steel plant coming up at Nagarnar in Bastar division.

The concentrate is intended for making pellets required for feeding to NMDC's Steel Plant at Nagarnar, officials stated.

For part of this project, investment proposals involving 2 MTPA Ore Processing Plant at Bacheli, 15 MTPA Slurry Pipeline system from Bacheli to Nagarnar and 2 MTPA Pellet Plant at Nagarnar has been approved by the NMDC Board of Directors, they stated.

Other pre-project activities such as detailed route survey, Environmental clearance, Forest clearance crossing permission from Railways and National Highway Authorities, MoU with Chhattisgarh Government for sanction of utilities (Water and Electrical power) have also been taken up and are in progress, officials stated.

All necessary statutory clearances including Environmental Clearance from Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF) and the Government of Chhattisgarh have been obtained for setting up of the Nagarnar plant, officials stated.

The Rail Transport Clearance was received and the Final Detailed Project Report of Railway siding is also approved by East Coast Railway, they stated.

The Chhattisgarh government has sanctioned water and power for construction as well as for operation of the plant as well as for providing power supply to operate the steel plant.

The Chhattisgarh State Power Transmission Company limited (CSPTCl) has awarded work order for the construction of 400 KV transmission line from Raipur to Jagdalpur (about 320 Kms.)400/220 KV Sub station at Jagdalpur and 220 KV transmission line from 400/220 KV Sub station to NISP Nagarnar and the work is progressing at the site.

The cost of construction of 400 KV transmission line from Raipur to Jagdalpur and Sub station at Jagdalpur will be equally shared by NMDC and CSPTCl. For the 220 KV power from Jagdalpur to Nagarnar the entire cost will be borne by NMDC.

Stage-I Forest clearances for 400 KV Transmission line and 400/220 KV Sub station have been obtained.

Engineering Consultancy and Project Monitoring Services contracts have been awarded to M/s MECON ltd.

For expeditious execution and commissioning of the steel plant the nine major technological package in respect of various production units viz. Sinter Plant Blast Furnace Complex, Raw Material Handling System, Coke Oven Plant, By Product Plant Steel Melting Shop, Thin Slab Caster and Hot Strip Mill lime and Dolo Plant and Oxygen Plant have been awarded on turn-key basis.

Civil and Structural and Equipment erection works for most of the aforesaid major technological packages are in progress. Most of the auxiliary packages have also been awarded and the works are in progress, officials stated.
