The district police began to keep a tab on the messages and photographs being shared by netizens in social network application WhatsApp and networking sites such as Facebook following complaints of spreading rumours.

According to a police officer, the police was forced to keep a watch on the activities on the social networking sites and WhatsApp after some of its users used them very effectively for spreading lies and rumors that created  confusion.

Even though keeping a watch on everything that is shared through these networks is a herculean task, it has become essential to put some checks and balances on the materials shared through them to ensure that no one should be allowed to create confusion, says an official.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) Badri Narayan Meena urged the netizens to discontinue their friendship with such groups who spread rumors and other unpleasant messages with immediate effect to avoid legal action against them in the event of breaking the law.

According to him, even those who like and forward such damaging information would also be held responsible like the one who uploaded it. He also urged them, to inform the police immediately in case they would come across any such message or photograph that violate the provision of the cyber law.
