Staff Reporter

nThe Chhattisgarh State Women Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of a human trafficking related incident in Rajnandgaon district and has learnt more women up to age 30 years are missing across the state.

Efforts are on to create awareness at police stations and with legal aid cells on the seriousness of the issue, Commission Chairperson Kiranmayee Nayak told the media on Tuesday.

She said the Inspector General of Police (Durg Range) has been asked to seek daily reports while the police headquarters has been urged to ensure a weekly report on the progress of the investigation in human trafficking to the Commission.

Police in Rajnandgaon had arrested five persons -- four from Dongargarh in Rajnanbdgaon and one from Raipur -- after a married woman who was abducted and sold off managed to reach the police and revealed her plight.

Three more arrests are expected from Haryana.

Kiranmayee said the case is highly sensitive. Preliminary investigation indicated it is an organized crime racket and those involved may have higher political connections and protection. That is why they are taking the victim on planes, spending over `50,000 as flight charges.

She added that from Dongargarh region a total of 35 women were found missing, out of which 24 have been found. Eleven are still missing. Such cases have been reported from other districts also.

There is a need to review other cases of missing women in Raipur, Durg and Kabirdham districts. Already a special investigation team has been set up.

In the name of giving them a better life, girls are taken away and exploited, she said.
