A mental health camp was organized on Tuesday in the Raipur Central Jail where the badly affected prisoners were found to be suffering from depression and anxiety.
The camp was held under the District Mental Health Programme, an official release said.
Dr Avinash Shukla, a psychiatrist from a private Clinic, said 41 males were examined in the camp.
The mental state of people often changes in jail. It causes mental stress and a sense of guilt as to how people outside may be judging them, the release said.
Most jail inmates are addicted to alcohol and gutka and often try to hurt themselves or others or become very violent if they don't get intoxicated, which requires counselling, it said.
The counselling was held to tackle the problems of sleep, anxiety and frustration.
Another psychologist, Mamta Giri Goswami, said that most prisoners are in depression due to stress. They are told to go for regular talk and get enough sleep each day.
