Maoists attack CRPF camp; one trooper injured

Staff Reporter

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was injured on Friday when Maoists opened indiscriminate firing at a CRPF camp in the restive Balkangunda area of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh. About 40 Maoists came and attacked the camp. However, heavy retaliatory firing by CRPF jawans forced the insurgents to flee into the jungle, police said. It may be recalled that in April this year, seven Special Task Force (STF) troopers were killed and 10 others were injured in a fierce gun battle with Maoists in the forested patch of Pidmel-Polampalli in the district.

Meanwhile a CRPF jawan was also injured on Friday in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion in Sukma district. The incident occurred around 2.15 pm in the Chintalnar-Burkapalli area of the district near Gadgadmeta village when a Road Opening Party (ROP) was carrying out its operation on Jagargunda-Dornapal road according to Sukma Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Santosh Singh.

The ROP was deployed on Jagargunda-Dornapal route to ensure security to goods vehicles which were returning after supplying ration to Jagargunda from Dornapal, he said. While security personnel were patrolling the area, a jawan accidentally came in contact with a pressure bomb planted by the Maoists near Gadgadmeta which exploded, Singh said. The Constable Aditya Kumar belonging to 74th battalion of CRPF sustained injuries in the incident, he said. Soon after the incident, reinforcement was rushed to the spot and injured was taken to a local hospital.
