Machkot residents take pledge for liquor prohibition

Staff Reporter

In an inspiring decision, residents of Machkot village in tribal-dominated Bastar region have taken a pledge that they would not allow anyone in the village to either prepare liquor or consume it.

A complete prohibition has been enforced in the village and the person found guilty would now have to pay heavy penalty.

With rising literacy level in Bastar villages and fallout of increasing domestic violence because of liquor consumption, people residing in this village are now looking determined to do away with their age-old customs and traditions. Notable, Machkot had also received the honour of being a completely literate area of Bastar district.

Forest Management Committee of the village called a meeting in the village and after discussing in details, issued their consent to enforce prohibition in the village which already had been adjudged as a model village of the region.
