The PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHDCCI) is organising a Conference on titled “Green Building & Building Rating Systems” on Wednesday at Hotel Babylon International, VIP Road, Raipur from 10.30 am.

As per the forecast, Indian economy may emerge as fastest growing in the world and overtake China for the first time. Against this backdrop, the construction industry will play a major role as it is one of the largest economic activities contributing to country’s development, a PHDCCI press release issued here on Tuesday stated.

While the rapid urbanization and government initiatives like smart city programme will accelerate the pace of construction activity, however, it will also lead to pressure on the resources like energy, water, materials etc. Most major Indian cities today carry a dubious distinction of worst outdoor air quality in world, it stated.

At this conference, leading national experts on Green Buildings will converge to share their thoughts and perspectives for a sustainable tomorrow, and suggest the way forward by addressing new contemporary topics, subjects and case studies.

The objective of this conference is to impart knowledge on Green Building concepts, learn about latest rating systems from IGBC/TERI and share best practices in Green Buildings and to promote business opportunities for Green building products and technologies, Facilitate Market Transformation and involve all stakeholders in the green building movement and Exhibit Green Building Products, Technologies and services.

Incidentally, the Union Ministry of Urban Development in a statement informed on Wednesday that States have broadly agreed to ensure compliance  with the proposed Environmental Guidelines for construction projects in urban areas stating that the stipulations are feasible for implementation.

A broad consensus in this regard emerged at a four hour long consultative Workshop on ‘Climate Change Mitigation in Urban Sector’ organized by the Ministry of Urban Development with all the stakeholders  in New Delhi on September 21, 2015.

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change made a detailed presentation on ‘Environmental Guidelines for Buildings’ containing about 30 parameters to be complied with for efficient management of energy, water, land, solid waste, air quality and noise levels during pre-construction, construction and post construction period.

The Workshop has been organized to sensitize the States and other stakeholders to the need for green construction in view of the fact that building sector consumes 40% of electricity generated in the country, 30% of raw materials and 20% each of water and land resources besides generating 30% of solid waste and 20% of effluents.

Durga Shankar Misra, Additional Secretary(Urban Development) urged the States to be pro-active in ensuring compliance with green construction norms in view of the commitment of the Central Government to mitigate emission of Green House Gases responsible for climate change.

Sushil Kumar, Additional Secretary(Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change) said that the objective of the Environmental Guidelines for Buildings was to enable energy efficient, water co-efficient and green sufficient construction through reduced use of natural and depletable resources, recycling, recharge and reuse of water.

Town Planners, Architects, Engineers, Representatives of Pollution Control Boards, Municipal officials and representatives of real estate bodies besides senior officials from different ministries of the Central Government participated in the consultations.
