Staff Reporter

The patients suffering from chronic kidney disease and undergoing dialysis got a chance to interact with a team of nephrologists from MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital here on Thursday.

The event was organised to mark ‘World Kidney Day’. The hospital also conducted a symbolic campaign by distributing free bottles of drinking water to people in order to spread the message of keeping kidneys in good health just like other organs, stressing upon the required amount of fluid intake by drinking pure water.

A unique interactive session was held between nephrologists and patients undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dr Sunil Dharmani, Consultant, Nephrology, spoke about ‘living with Chronic Kidney Disease and Prevention’. Chronic kidney failure is associated with complications, which are debilitating and impose a serious detriment to quality of life.

He said, “The change can be brought about with large awareness campaign promoting preventive behaviours, facilitate early screening of people with diabetes and hypertension, so as to prevent early onset of kidney disease in India.”

The patients were told to follow some rules in their daily life to slow down or prevent CKD. They were told to be physically active, manage sugar level in case of diabetes, maintain blood pressure in healthy range, control cholesterol levels, follow a kidney friendly diet, avoid tobacco, and limit alcohol and keep a healthy weight.
