The Congress MlA from Dantewada, Devti Karma was on Thursday arrested by the police while she was staging a sit-in along with the Congress workers at Bacheli police station. The Chakka-jam was staged in support of women workers of the Congress party who were allegedly ‘ill-treated’ by the Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) of Bacheli Municipality a day earlier. The women workers had taken out a procession and staged a demonstration at the Municipality on the previous day for not providing basic services such as drinking water and sanitation. The women went to the office of the CMO to hand over a memorandum. An altercation broke out between the protesting women workers and the CMO. A complaint was lodged by the CMO with the police in this regard and a case was registered against the Congress workers. On the other hand, the women workers accused the CMO of misbehaving and approached the police to register a case but they said that the complaint was not entertained by the police. Annoyed by the alleged ‘one-sided’ action of the police, the Congress workers staged a sit-in under the leadership of MlA Devti Karma.Police then arrested Karma along with half-a-dozen Congress workers.
