A successful implantation of an artificial valve in the heart of a Sashtra Seema Bal (SSB) trooper posted in a Naxalite area of Chhattisgarh was carried out at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, here.
Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgeon and Head of Department Dr. Krishnakant Sahu told the media that the patient was on a recovery path.
He said Ashok Kumar Thapa, a resident of West Bengal and now posted in Chhattisgarh, approached the cardiac surgery department complaining of breathlessness and chest pain.
His problem was detected as severe aortic stenosis (narrow aortic valve) and severe aortic regurgitation (valve does not close tightly), due to which the normal blood circulation to the body was affected.
Dr Sahu said an aortic valve replacement surgery was conducted and the patient was fitted with a Regent Mechanical Heart Valve. As on Wednesday, he is healthy and ready to be discharged.
The trooper thanked the ACI doctors and nurses for saving his life. He said he could have approached the Army Hospital in Delhi but preferred to be treated here.
