An injured Maoist was arrested following an encounter between insurgents and a Police team in a forested patch of insurgency-hit Dantewada district of Bastar, police said here on Monday.

A joint team of Special Task Force (STF) and District Force (DF) had started on an anti-insurgency operation from Kuakonda police station limits. The team was in a forested patch near Kankipara village where they had a face-off with armed guerrillas who opened indiscriminate firing on the police team, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dantewada, Kamlochan Kashyap informed.

The troopers also retaliated and the intermittent gun battle lasted for about an hour after which the insurgents ran away into core part of the jungle areas, he added.

later on, while searching the spot an injured ultra was found who was identified as Kartam Pandu. A muzzle gun and other items of daily use were also seized from the spot.

Pandu was an active military platoon member of Maoists in the region, the SP said while adding that he is undergoing treatment at district hospital Dantewada.

Police would interrogate the insurgent once he recovers properly, Kashyap said.

Pandu was allegedly involved in blowing up a vehicle of security forces near Mailwada on March 30 in Kuakonda area wherein seven CRPF men had lost their lives, the SP mentioned.
