Chief Minister Raman Singh on Friday appealed to the people of the State to actively participate in ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan’ (Clean India Mission) which will be commenced on the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the State.

The Chief Minister said that under ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan’, a ‘Cleanliness Week’ will be observed in all 20,000 villages and 169 cities of Chhattisgarh with the objective of creating better environment and public awareness.

In his appeal to the general public, Singh said that it is necessary to build a clean India for achieving the goal of healthy India. ‘This cleanliness week will be observed till birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi i.e. October 2.’

Singh said that unhygienic environment is the major cause of most of the diseases. That is why maintaining hygiene is both individual and social responsibility of everyone. ‘Every citizen should cooperate in maintaining cleanliness in their houses, neighbourhood, their ward and their city as a whole, along with public places like roads, hospital, railway station, bus stand etc.’

The Chief Minister said that it is a mandate for panchayats and urban bodies to ensure clean surroundings in respective villages and cities. ‘But public participation is also necessary for this purpose’, he said.

Singh said that the ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan’ under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is certainly a commendable initiative to create public awareness across the nation regarding importance of hygiene.

Singh has appealed people to take pledge of hygiene at the programmes to be organised in villages and cities on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary i.e. on October 2.
