Flooding in many areas of Chhattisgarh's Bemetara district has forced people to abandon their houses amid snapped power supply, leading authorities to launch on Monday rescue operations and also restore electric supply on a war footing.

Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Co Ltd (CSPDCL) Durg region Executive Director Sanjay Patel said due to the overflowing Sheonath river, flood waters had entered the villages of Jhiriya, Bavaghatoli and Uslapur.

This had damaged the electrical poles and cut power lines. Even the transformers have been submerged in water.

Patel said in a statement that to ensure immediate restoration of power supply, the company staff were using boats to undertake repairs, at times travelling 1.5 km to reach the affected areas.

Company Superintending Engineer V.R. Maurya said the transformers damaged by water are being repaired.

Similarly, Bemetara Sub Division Assistant Engineer Gulab Sahu said the power supply for villages Bahinga, Baherghat, Damai and Navagaon have been restored after the 11 Feeder Lines were damaged.

The power supply was restored through a new supply line.

Meanwhile, flooding was reported after Sheonath, Kharun and Haalf rivers as well as rivulets Chuhiya and Ghotunala breached their banks.

The villages in the Navagarh tehsil including Karamsen, Naadhghat and Tarpongi have turned into islands due to flooding. The district administration rescued 211 people and ferried them to safety with the help of four boats.

The homeless have been given basic necessities.
