Staff Reporter

The police have nabbed five rebels along with firearms in Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh following an encounter on Sunday, police said.

The insurgents were arrested from forests falling under limits of Raghunathnagar police station during morning hours, said a senior police officer.

According to the police, a police team undertaking search operation in the region was targetted by a group of armed rebels following which security personnel retaliated. Unable to withstand retaliatory fire launched by police, insurgents fled to dense forest while five cadres of the group were nabbed by police. From their possession, police have seized as many as five rifles, some live cartridges, Naxal literature and other daily consumables.

Initial investigation revealed that the arrested rebels along with cadres who managed to flee the encounter site were reported to be camping in the region during the past few days and most probably came for extorting money, said police sources.

Further investigation is underway, added police.
