Five deer were allegedly poisoned in Barnawapara area of Mahasamund district.

A person has been arrested in this connection and process for handing him over to police has been initiated informed Additional Managing Director (AMD) Chhattisgarh State Forest, Development Corporation AK Dwivedi of Friday.

Bodies of two males, two female deer and a fawn were found in Barnawapara area, he informed The Pioneer over the telephone.

After the incident came to light, the Department officials swung into action and identified the person behind the killings of the deer and was nabbed.

Further investigations in this connection are being undertaken and process for handing over the accused to police is under process,

he added.

“After the incident, the Forest Department officials reached Mohanda village under whose limits the bodies of deer were found. We held a meeting with the villagers and asked them not to indulge in such activities,” AMD Dwivedi said.

According to the locals, the dead bodies of the deer were found in a forested patch about six km from Barnawapara town near a resort in Mohanda village falling under the jurisdiction of State Forest, Development Corporation.

It seems that they were poisoned by giving Urea mixed with water. During summer season, due to shortage of water in the jungle, the wild animals are forced to come out of forest in search of water, another forest official said.

Meanwhile, some reports claimed that about 20 deer were killed in the incident. However the forest officials rejected the number confirming that bodies of only five deer were found.
