Elephants kill 5 people in 6 months

Staff Reporter

Wild elephants have killed five persons in the forest villages of Korba district during the last six months. The panic-stricken villagers are forced to stay awake for the entire night to save their lives. According to official sources, the migrant elephants have made the life of forest villagers difficult. The tuskers had demolished dozens of mud houses in which many people got trapped and killed and destroyed crops.

The Forest Department has come up with Global Positioning System (GPS) to trace the elephants and through SMS the locations can be traced but it is not working due to constant migration of elephants from one place to the other.  At present it has been implemented in three forest circles, except in Katghora forest division.  On Wednesday morning elephants were seen roaming at Shantinagar nursery. The residents of Shantinagar are terrified by the news of migrating elephants present in their area. Although no loss of life has been reported so far, the Forest Department is expected to supply safety tools to villagers like chilli powder, kerosene oil and crackers.
