A 60-year-old man succumbed to injuries after a wild elephant trampled him in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, a forest official said on Thursday.

The incident took place in Charaimara village in the Kunkuri forest range when Bhuleshwar Singh had gone to his relative’s place on Wednesday night, Jashpur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Jitendra Upadhyay said.

As Singh came face-to-face with the elephant, the enraged animal ran after him and slammed him on the ground with its trunk, he said.

The villagers took him to hospital where doctors declared him dead, the officer added.

The family of the deceased was given an initial relief amount of Rs 25,000.

The elephant had entered the village from a nearby jungle and none of the villagers were aware about it, the officer said.
