Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) chief Bhupesh Baghel said in the Chhattisgarh Assembly on Thursday that it is not for the first time that the State has witnessed drought situation but the farmer suicides have taken place for the first time.

Although, it was a known factor that large number of people migrate to other parts of the country in quest of employment but it is for the first time that around 26 farmers have ended their lives,” said Baghel.

He was participating in a discussion during the  adjournment motion in the Chhattisgarh Assembly.

Taking the discussion forward, BJP member Shivratan Sharma said : ‘Although, farmers have committed suicide in Chhattisgarh but drought is not the reason. Congress is just trying to politicize farmer suicides.’

The State Government had already declared 117 tehsils as drought-hit where no taxes on land will be recovered from farmers.

The word ‘Drought’ has been included in the list of natural calamities under Revenue Book Circular (6-4) which will ensure proper and sufficient compensation to the farmers facing drought situation, said State’s Revenue Minister Prem Prakash Pandey.

Reacting to the reply of Minister, Congress members staged a walk out from the House.
