The Chhattisgarh Medical Officers’ Association has withdrawn their plan of mass resignation after a meeting with Chief Minister Raman Singh here on Tuesday.
The Government doctors demanding release of surgeon Dr RK Gupta accused in the Bilaspur sterilization camp deaths, had earlier called for a symbolic protest from Wednesday which was to be intensified by mass leave and mass resignation.“After meeting with the Chief Minster, the Association has decided to suspend the protest. The Chief Minister has assured that justice will be done to the doctors,” said officiating President of the Association Dr Akhilesh Tripathi.
Earlier in the day, the government doctors had held a meeting under the banner of Medical Officers Association in Raipur and decided to work with black ribbons from November 26-30.The doctors decided to cut their duty timing by hour from December 1 to mark the protest. Thereafter they had plans to go for mass leave from December 15-17 followed by mass resignation if government fails to consider their demand.
However, the Association office-bearers met the Chief Minister later and held discussion over the issue. The Association eventually decided to suspend the protest but threatened to restore it back if the government takes no positive action. It is worth mentioning that Dr RK Gupta has performed laparoscopic surgeries on 83 women in the sterilisation camp organised at Pendari village of Bilaspur district on November 8. As many as 12 women had died due to post-operative complications in different hospitals.
Dr Gupta and Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bilaspur Dr RK Bhange were initially suspended with two more doctors and later the duo was terminated. FIR was lodged against Dr Gupta who is presently in Central jail, Bilaspur.Indian Medical Association(Chhattisgarh Branch) and State Medical Officers Association had raised strong objection against the Government action.
