Talking to The Pioneer Verma said “Basically my duty will be to deal with the state government’s court cases in the High Court and ascertain that the government policies are defended well there”.
“For example, the present government wants acquittal for innocent tribals booked in fake Naxal-related cases. I will try to accomplish the wish of the government and get the innocent tribals acquitted,” he said.
Another main duty of the Advocate General is to give advice to the state government on legal matters and to perform such other duties of legal characters, he added.
Regarding the first thing he will do after assuming the post, Verma said digitalization of AG office would be my first priority.
At present government officials deputed as Officer in Charges of cases (OiCs) had to run to judicial capital, Bilaspur several times from far flung areas such as Dantewada to get the files to represent the government in the court, the AG said. After digitalization there would be no need for running around as documents and necessary files could be accessed through internet from anywhere in the state, he said.
Notable, Verma was till now a senior advocate with the High court of Chhattisgarh and had rendered his services for nearly 23 years.
With the elevation as AG, he will enjoy the status of a cabinet minister.
