Staff Reporter

Covid-19 killed 79 people in the past one week in Chhattisgarh, where the elderly still face risk from the deadly virus, the government said on Thursday.

The Covid death audit report said the 79 deaths occurred between January 8 and 14, with 71 percent of the fatalities being male, a press release said, adding 68 percent of the deaths were due to co-morbidity.

The report said that fatality rate for people above 60 years was 5.02 percent and for those between 45 and 59 years was 2.38 percent.

Experts said after reviewing the report that 27 percent died within 24 hours of admission in hospitals and 9 percent died after 48 hours. Another 14 percent died in two to three days.

The doctors said some people are still carless and not getting themselves tested soon after the Covid symptoms  surface.

A 52-year-old man from Surajpur was admitted in a hospital at Ambikapur after testing Covid positive on January 6. The man had Covid symptoms on January 1. He died on January 14. Delay in testing and starting treatment caused the death.

Similarly, a 52-year-old woman from Raipur took admission in BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital here on January 7. She had Covid like symptoms since January 2. She too could not be saved.
