Eyeing the civic body polls scheduled by the end of this year, the city wing of Congress party has launched a series of protests against general issues, including ration card, drinking water and dilapidated roads, concerning the local populace.
In this sequence, a large number of people led by Raipur District Congress Committee on Friday decided to gherao Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) Commissioner, Avneesh Kumar Sharan’s official residence against the ‘poor’ sanitation system in the city.
The agitated party workers were demanding removal of Kivar Company, which was given the contract of lifting and disposal of garbage generated within the city limit.
The protestors marched towards the RMC Commissioner’s residence situated at Officers Colony in form of a rally from Congress headquarters but were stopped midway by a heavy police contingent. The protestors were holding banners and carrying bags containing garbage to throw outside the Commissioner’s residence as a medium of registering their protest. Furious over being stopped by the police, the party workers threw the garbage on the road.
“The Kivar Company is getting paid about Rs2 to 2.5 crore per month as per the calculation of lifting the garbage. However, the sanitation system in the city is dilapidating” alleged the Congress party’s Raipur City District President, Vikas Upadhyay.
The protesting workers demanded to blacklist the company and alleged that it has completely failed to improve sanitation system in the city.
