Congress asks for fixing reserve price of farmland, opposes proposed new legislation

Staff Reporter

Criticising the state government for creating yet another hurdle for the farmers of the state in the name of protecting them, Congress demanded fixing of the reserve price (base price) of agricultural land instead of bringing the proposed legislation banning sale of farm land for non farming activities.

In a release on Wednesday, spokesman of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee Sushil  Anand Shukla alleged that the proposed legislation of the state government will only increase the problem of state farmers who would be willing to sell their land to fulfil their other obligations as according to the new legislation they will be forced to prove that the purchaser of their land is a farmer and for that the farmers will have to frequent government offices making them vulnerable to become victim of the bureaucratic hassles.

Also, after the new legislation, while state government will be able to forcibly acquire farmers’ land, but farmers will not be able to sell their land directly to industry and thereby be deprived of getting market value of their land, Shukla alleged.

He further said, if the state government fixes minimum reserve price of farm land and let the farmers negotiate with purchaser independently, the farmers will definitely get better price of their land, Shukla claimed.

The Congress spokesman claimed that in case the state government brings the proposed legislation banning the sale of farm land to non-farmers, the state farmers will not only be exposed to land mafia and brokers but also encourage outsider people to purchase farmland in the name of establishing farmhouse.
