Cong set to corner Govt over wide set of issues

Staff Reporter

The Winter Session of the Chhattisgarh Assembly which begins on Monday is expected to be stormy with the Opposition Congress preparing to corner the ruling party over a wide set of issues  including sterilization deaths, paddy procurement policy and Naxal incidents.

In a meeting of Congress MlAs held early this month, ClP leader TS Singhdeo had decided to raise the issues including that of paddy procurement policy and crop insurance scheme, sterilization deaths, missing women and children cases, land allotted to industries, surrender by insurgents and increasing Naxal attacks during the Assembly session.

This apart, the Congress had brought a ‘no confidence motion’ against the Assembly Speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal during the last Assembly session for his alleged involvement in making encroachment over a government land. The ClP leader had already made it clear that the issue was still alive and Congress MlAs would ask the State government to inform the Assembly if any action was taken in this regard.

Besides, the senior Congress leader had also expressed need of extending duration of different sessions of the Assembly for a minimum of 60 or maximum of 90 sittings as the days slated for it fall short to cover all the issues. As per the information, more than 1300 questions have been filed by the MlAs of both the major parties while dozens of calling attention and adjournment motions have been filed for the session. On the other hand, the government is likely to present a supplementary budget and two to three bills in winter session of the Assembly which will conclude on December 24.
