Cong remembers martyrs of Jheeram massacre

Staff Reporter

The Congress in Chhattisgarh on Monday observed 'Jheeram Shradhhanjali Diwas' and paid homage to its top leaders who were among 29 persons massacred in 2013 at Jheeram in Bastar by suspected Naxalites.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Speaker Charandas Mahant, around half-a-dozen ministers, PCC President Mohan Markam and others attended the function at the Congress headquarters Rajiv Bhawan.

Later, talking to reporters, the Chief Minister announced that the University in Bastar would be named after former Leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma who was among those killed in Jheeram.

Karma organised a campaign called "Salwa Judum" which for long     pitted tribals against Naxalites, stunning the Maoist movement.

Calling it a "mass       political assassination", Baghel expressed distress that even after seven years justice has not been provided to the departed souls. The conspiracy angle has not been probed while everyone wants to know the truth behind the cold-blooded killings, he said.

The BJP government which then ruled Chhattisgarh handed over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which completed its probe but without shedding light on the conspiracy angle, he said.

Hence, the NIA probe is incomplete, the Chief Minister said.

Then Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee chief Nandkumar Patel,      veteran Congress leader Vidyacharan Shukla, Mahendra Karma, Congress leader from Rajnandgaon Uday Mudliyar were among the 29 persons who were   massacred.
