Staff Reporter

The process  of selecting candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls appears to be in its final leg in the Chhttiagerh unit of the Congress party here.

The party is learnt to have zeroed in on a name for making a panel for each of the 72 Assembly seats. The ‘Screening Committee’ is to decide on the rest of 18 seats, party sources informed. The meeting of the ‘ Screening Committee’ is expected late on Saturday evening and in instances where there are more than one contender for a seat being proposed, the party’s ‘Central Election Committee’ will take a final call on such a situation, sources said.

All the names of the contenders would be sent to the party’s ‘Central  Election Committee’ after the due process of screening is completed on Saturday.

It was learnt that a dual list of contestants would be generated. It is also being talked about in the party circles that the constituency of sitting MlA Mohammed Akbar may be changed on his reported wish to contest the polls from Kawardha instead of Pandari .

Before delimitation, a large chunk of the Kawardha Assembly segment came under Virendranagar Assembly segment and Akbar had been contesting polls from Virendranagar.

There are other MlAs such as Mahantram Sunderdas who has reportedly expressed desire to contest from Janjgir-Champa instead of Jaijpur while Rudrakumar Guru wants to contest from Ahiwara, Tamradwaj Sahu from Durg (Rural) and Pratima Chandrakar reportedly wants to contest from Gunderdehi instead of Durg (Rural).
