Cong-BJP face off over security issue

Staff Reporter

Chhattisgarh Congress and BJP crossed swords after the security cover of former chief minister Raman Singh and his family members was degraded on Tuesday.

Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Dharamlal Kaushik said it is a sensitive issue. Based on prevailing conditions, it is the duty of the government to provide security of important persons. The curtailment is an act of hostility he said and sought an explanation as to why it was done in a Naxal-affected state. Former CM visits Naxal affected areas while he has been always a target of Naxalites which even security agencies admit, the BJP leader said.

Kaushik demanded restoration of security cover to previous level.

Meanwhile, Panchayat and rural development minister T. S. Singhdeo said the state government has learnt a lesson from Central government on security of VIPs as how it can be reduced.

If Centre feels there is no need for security cover of a few persons, then state can also think in similar way. “We are learning a lot from the central government and soon other things will also follow,” he said.

JCC (J) president and   ex-MLA Amit Jogi, on rejection of his plea for security cover, said, there is no need for security even the three gunmen provided to him should be withdrawn. Chief Minister needs more security in present scenario, he added.
