Staff Reporter

A nine-member fact finding team of the Opposition Congress party visited the Chorpani village in Rajnandgaon district after allegation that a rape victim committed suicide after police refused to lodge a complaint, a statement of Congress said.

The woman was allegedly raped in her village Chorpani by a man on December 16.  She and her husband came to the local police post at Ambagarh to lodge a complaint. Instead of providing her justice and take action against the offender, the in-charge of the post, Sub Inspector Harinarayan Rajput had allegedly abused the victim and raised question on her character, the Congress party said.

Rajput also abused the victim’s husband and beaten up him black and blue to protect the accused. When police refused to lodge their complaint, the couple returned back home. On December 19, the victim committed suicide. Prior to her death, the victim had told her children that she was not able to forget the insult on her. Her husband has left the home for fear of police. After receiving the information, State Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel formed a nine-member team and asked it to visit the affected area and submit a report for further action. The team has already reached at the site, the party said.
