Staff Reporter

The School Education Department is considering reducing for this academic session the syllabus of the Chhattisgarh board in view of coronavirus crisis.

“We are considering reducing the syllabus for students as a major portion of the time has been lost to coronavirus lockdown,” School Education Minister Premsai Singh Tekam told The Pioneer over telephone.

Generally, there are 220 working days in an academic year. It seems this year it will not be possible to achieve it, he said. So, we are pondering over cutting the syllabus, the Minister said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of School Education, Alok Shukla, told The Pioneer that since it is not clear when schools will reopen, it will be premature to comment on syllabus reduction. However, we will try to adjust the syllabus depending on the situation, he added.

Educationist and Child Phycologist Dr Jawahar Surisetti felt that the Chhattisgarh government should reduce the syllabus as about 30 percent of school time has already passed. He suggested decreasing the depth of syllabus while retaining the concept.

“The National Testing Agency that conducts exams like NEET, JEEE is also considering to appropriate its syllabus. In these circumstances the state government should also reduce the syllabus for this year,” he said.
