Black start-grid restoration mock drill’— a unique exercise to restore power supply in case of inter-state grid failure was carried out at Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company limited’s office in Danganiya on Sunday.

The mock drill was jointly carried out by engineers from State-owned Power Generation, Power Transmission and Power Distribution Companies. After the drill, officials said in case of complete black out or ‘black start’, the power supply could be resumed within 19 minutes.

In case of inter-state grid failure, several serious challenges erupt. The ideal frequency which is 50 hertz starts fluctuating rapidly, which creates the chances for tripping of the power plant. For dealing with such situation, engineers carried out mock drill, officials informed.

Experts from Western Regional load Dispatch Centre Mumbai were also monitoring the mock drill through the ‘State load Dispatch Center’ at Dangania. After the completion of mock drill for black start recovery, Company Management congratulated its employees.

Notably, under these circumstances all the power plants of the affected State completely shut down. Then for restoring the power plant diesel generator sets are brought into use. For such emergency situation Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company ltd (CSPGCl) has identified Bango Hydro Electric Plant where diesels sets of 250 KW have been installed, officials informed.

The Western Regional Grid comprises of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The grid consumes about 42 MW power.

The mock drill started at 11 am under which black out situation was created in 132 KW Bango project. Similar artificial crisis was created in Jamnipali (Korba) region. After this, the restoration work began it took 19 minutes to complete, officials said.

Notably, similar kind of situation was created in July 30-31, 2012 when blackout had happened in 21 States. Chhattisgarh had remained, however, unaffected from the blackout. After this incident, need for ‘black start grid restoration mock drill’ was felt.
