The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Sunday clarified that no new addition will be made in the list of health or frontline workers category for Covid vaccination.

Chhattisgarh Health Minister T.S. Singh Deo on April 2 wrote to Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan requesting him to include journalists as frontline corona warrior category for the vaccination.

“On the advice of NEGVAC (National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19), the Ministry has stopped adding any new category for vaccination registration," a press release said.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on April 3 had released a circular for all states in this connection, it said.

The circular said a review found that in some vaccination centres ineligible persons had got vaccine doses as health and frontline workers in violation of the guidelines issued by Indian government.

In the past few days, there has been a 24 percent hike in registration numbers in both categories. On NEGVAC’s recommendation, registration in both categories has been stopped, it said.

Now only people above 45 years will be registered on the CoWin portal. People already registered as health and frontline workers will be vaccinated soon.
