Central Govt staff keep off work; join nationwide strike

Staff Reporter

The work of most of the Central Government establishments came to a grinding halt on Wednesday across Chhattisgarh as officials and employees kept off work on a nationwide, day-long strike call given by the country’s 10 trade unions against labour policies of the Central Government.

In Raipur, a string of demonstrations were led by the members of various trade unions in front of their respective offices.

In all other key cities and towns of Chhattisgarh, Central public sector establishments wore a deserted look as officials and employees kept themselves off duty.

Notably, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) termed the nationwide day-long strike, called by 10 Trade Unions on Wednesday as ‘disruptive and uncalled for’.

While as per feedback received from industry, the impact of the strike has been partial, the real concern is that the image of India as an attractive business destination could take a beating. The Indian economy cannot afford such disruptions and all constituents are required to work together to take the country forward.  “We, in CII, earnestly appeal to Trade Unions to resolve all pending issues through dialogue and discussion,” said Sumit Mazumder, President,  CII.

“The suspension of work in the banks could hamper banking transactions which are crucial for the conduct of business operations especially in areas which are serviced by branch banking operations,” the CII release said.

CII strongly believes that labour law reforms are crucial and important to create a conducive environment for investments and employment generation in the country.  CII fully supports the process of tripartite consultation adopted by the Government and sincerely hopes that all concerned will amicably resolve their differences through a consultative process.

Mazumder said that the current Government has performed well on economic parameters and given the prevailing constraints, it is still trying to do its best. For every problem an amicable solution can be reached through mutual discussions but resorting to such means like strike / bandh will be detrimental for the growth of the economy, particularly when the country is facing the heat of global economic turbulence.
