The Union Rural Development Ministry has agreed to substantially increase human workdays under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) for Chhattisgarh, it was announced on Friday.

The Ministry has given in-principle approval for adding 1.50 crore human workdays for Chhattisgarh.

“Now the total target for financial year 2020-21 will be increased to 15 crore human workdays which earlier was 13.50 crore human workdays. This decision was taken at a meeting of state Panchayat department and union Panchayat officials via video conferencing,” an official press release said.

Chhattisgarh is swiftly moving towards achieving the target and within five months of the ongoing fiscal it has completed 70 percent works, the statement said.

Amid lockdown and the return of labourers to Chhattisgarh, the state Panchayat Minister had asked the department to send a proposal to the union government for increasing workdays so that the workers can be provided jobs in their villages.

The statement said that 9.46 crore human workdays have already been availed. So far more than 48.70 lakh labourers from over 26 lakh families have been employed. About 79,000 families have received over 100 days of employment.
