BJP legislators tear bills, House adjourned sine die

Staff Reporter

The Chhattisgarh Assembly was on Wednesday adjourned sine die on the third day of its winter session after BJP members tore up bills and created a commotion on a day when the House began on a positive note.

The assembly opened with members from both ruling and opposition benches congratulating Speaker Dr Charan Das Mahant for completing four years of tenure, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on becoming a grandfather and Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma on his birthday.

But as Question Hour began, the opposition went on the offensive, firing away supplementary questions over corruption charges mainly in the departments of Urban Administration and Food and Civil Supplies.

The Speaker urged the opposition members to limit supplementary questions so that more questions can be raised. Congress members then rose from their seats and started shouting                  slogans.

The 12 BJP members and Pramod Sharma of JCC (J) then entered the well of the House, leading to their automatic suspension. The Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

BJP members wearing black arm bands returned to the House despite the Speaker's objection as their suspension had not been revoked.

The defiant BJP members again entered the well of the House and continued to hurl corruption charges.

The Speaker started went ahead with the election of the Deputy Speaker. He then adjourned the House for an hour.

On resumption, two bills (Gambling Act and Amendment Bill for Regularisation of Illegal Construction) were passed.

BJP's Brijmohan Agrawal said the proceedings were a total disrespect to the opposition. He then tore the bills and threw them towards the Speaker from the well of the House.

Others emulated him and then walked out of the House. The Speaker then adjourned the House sine die.
