BJP-Congress spar over quality of roads

Staff Reporter

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress          leaders were locked in a war of words over the quality of roads and their present dilapidated condition in Chhattisgarh.

Congress chief spokesman Sushil Anand Shukla said the real              corruption in roads was seen during the BJP’s 15-year tenure when even the Expressway became unfit for motoring even before its inauguration. It was the Congress government which repaired it.

He claimed that a road should remain good for            12-15 years whereas they have been damaged within three years.

BJP spokesperson Rajesh Munat asked the Congress government to hold an inquiry by a High Court or Supreme Court judge on the condition of roads in the state.

No action has ever been taken against the officials responsible for road maintenance, he told the media.

He said that if there was corruption in what was built during BJP rule, why was no action initiated against the contractors.

Former Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik said it was the duty of the government to          regularly repair or remake roads, which he alleged has not been done for four years.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel had asked the Public Works Department to repair roads in the state before December.
