SR

The Chhattisgarh Government will be bringing a bill on ‘Nutrition Security’ for its inclusion in the Chhattisgarh Food Security law 2012 in the monsoon session of the State Assembly.

A minor amendment would be made in the Chhattisgarh Food Security law 2012 for the inclusion of the ‘Nutrition Security’ clause, an official statement issued here said.

The amendment is being made with the objective of preventing cases of malnutrition among the poor with the proposed free distribution of 2 kgs of iodised sale ( Amrit salt of Chhattisgarh) besides Chana (gram ) and Dal.

Currently, the 11 lakh poorest families in Chhattisgarh under its Food Security law had been receiving 35 kgs of rice at  Rs one while in the Scheduled areas 2 kgs of Chana is being offered at Rs 75 per ration card and while in non scheduled areas there is eligibility of 2 kgs of Dal among 10 kgs of Chana in which iodized salt is being provided free of cost.

The Food Security law had also made the provision of providing food grains at subsidized cost to the State Government hostels and Ashram shalas with the inclusion of 42 lakh poor families on a priority basis. The Chhattisgarh Food Security law had also categorized tribes such as Abujhamaria, Birhor, Baiga, Kamar, Pahari Korva as ‘Antodaya Families’.

The Food Security law has also ensured complete transparency in its dealings as all records on sale of ration items  are to be made public every month with a provision for a public scrutiny. The new ration cards are now being issued in the name of the senior most  female member of the family with the objective of women empowerment.

As per the statement of Chief Minister Raman Singh, the objective of the Food Security law is to achieve the ‘Millenium Development Goals’ of the United Nations by freeing people from hunger and malnutrition. The Food Security law in Chhattisgarh so far covers 90 per cent of the population of the State.
