The Chhattisgarh government is set to start buying ‘gaumutra’ (cow urine) from Thursday to mark the ‘Hareli’ festival.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel will launch the initiative by purchasing the urine from a Gauthan in village Karsa in Durg district.
The government started the Godhan Nyay Yojana two years ago on July 20, 2020 on the occasion of Hareli. Under this scheme, cow dung was purchased at Rs 2 per kg from cattle owners.
The dung is used to produce organic manure on a large scale which is used by farmers, thereby promoting organic farming in the state.
The cow urine will be used to make pest control products and ‘Jeevamrut’ (liquid organic fertilizer).
The government had fixed the price of cow urine as Rs 4 per liter.
The move aims to minimize use of expensive chemical pesticides and promote organic farming by making organic pesticides available at nominal prices.
It also aims to minimize residue of chemical pesticides in food items.
Agricultural scientists suggest that cow urine insecticide is superior and cheaper alternative to chemical pesticides. Its disease resistance is much higher than chemical pesticides.
