Bandh disrupts normal life in Bastar region

Staff Reporter

A Bastar Bandh called by the Sarva Adivasi Samaj over alleged forced religious conversion and a police crackdown evoked a good response on Thursday in Chhattisgarh's Bastar               division.

Shops and business establishments across the seven districts of the Bastar division remained closed.

The Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries backed the               shutdown.

The protest followed as simmering differences between tribals and Christian communities in Narayanpur district led to violence on Monday. A mob vandalized a church and attacked police, injuring Superintendent of Police Sadanand Kumar.

The police arrested 10 persons including BJP District President Roop Sai Salam in connection with the violence.

To protest against the police action and to seek the release of its members, the Sarv Adivasi Samaj called for the shutdown on Thursday.

Though Narayanpur was exempt from the protest, traders did not open the shutters.
